The Importance of Proper Grounding
Every turntable needs proper grounding to prevent electrical hum. Without grounding, a turntable may have a different reference potential than the connected amplifier. This difference creates a compensating current — heard as an audible hum.
How Traditional Grounding Works
High-quality turntables include a separate ground cable that connects to an amplifier or phono stage’s ground terminal. This equalises potential differences between the devices, eliminating hum and ensuring quiet playback.
The Problem with Modern Amplifiers
Many modern amplifiers — especially soundbars and streaming speakers — do not include a ground terminal. These are known as “floating mass systems”, and when a standard turntable is connected to them, the lack of grounding can cause audible hum.
